Sandwich, Kent

Home > England > Kent > Sandwich

Sandwich is an historic medieval town in East Kent. It was one of the Cinque Ports where it's alliance with Dover, Hythe, Rye and Hastings made it one of the most important coastal port towns in England. However, the port silted up around the 15th Century and the town of Sandwich is now around two miles inland. Many medieval buildings still exist such as the Guildhall, and the 'old town' is a conservation area within the position of the former fortified walls. Evidence of the influence of the Dutch immigrants of the 1500's is visible in some of the town's buildings and churches.

The history of the area goes much further back, and the ruins of the Roman fort of Richborough are close by as visible evidence of the very first Roman settlements in England.

Sandwich is famous in modern times for it's two international golf courses, Royal St Georges and Prince's. Royal St Georges last hosted the Open Championship in 2003, and will again host the championship in 2011. Prince's hosted The Open Championship in 1932. Sandwich is also known for it's largest employer, the pharmaceutical company Pfizer which employs thousands of people in the East Kent area.

Whilst there are no nightclubs in Sandwich, there are many pubs, and the restaurants are excellent. Local attractions include the beach at the private Sandwich Bay estate, boat trips on the River Stour to the Roman ruins at Richborough, and there is a small cinema.

Nearby, there is the Sandwich and Pegwell Bay Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and the Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory Trust (SBBOT) located on the Kent coast in the Sandwich and Hacklinge SSSI where many species of butterflies and dragonflies can be seen, and the unique flora includes many rare orchid species.
