The Tyne and Wear coastline includes the city Sunderland. The Tyne area is split into North Tyneside is a coastal area on the north banks of the River Tyne, and includes the resorts of Whitley Bay, Tynemouth, and North Shields. There are three European Blue Flag beaches for safe family bathing. South Tyneside offers award winning sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs, and an abundance of wildlife, secluded coves, paths, cycling routes, and traditional seaside attractions at the resort of South Shields.
The city of Sunderland and it's boroughs have award-winning beaches at Roker and Seaburn, as well as spectacular coastal paths. The traditional seaside resort of Whitley Bay has a promenade, and sandy beach. Another popular tourist destination is Longsands in Tynemouth, which has a sandy beach suitable for surfing.
